As with all good things, there comes a time when you need to look back at your brand and your products to see if they are presenting the correct message, a task that we recently completed. The major change we have made is with our core product, Knowledge Engine. We originally selected that as a product name because most of our early focus was on addressing knowledge management issues, or at least what we thought were knowledge management issues, in both large and small companies.
What we found over the past 3 years was that our customers were actually building entire software systems from our Knowledge Engine application, and those systems were well beyond the subset of ‘knowledge management’.
Our customers were using our application as a way to address the significant shortcomings identified when trying to resolve business challenges with software, namely that it is hard to specify what you want, it takes a long time to get the software built, and it requires extra resources in the technology department to manage the software, and its delivery, once completed.
As it turns out, the long-term feedback from our customers, and the natural evolution of a new technology space - Software as a Service - has meant that our value proposition turned out to be different than what we had originally planned. It turned out to be making enterprise software easy to define, quick to build, and delivering the end solution as an on-line service. This is much bigger than knowledge management.
Over the past 6 months, we thought about the words that would describe this clearly, something that would reflect the ability to easily change, and to expand as and when needed. We settled on the word ‘elastic’, meaning 'spontaneously expansive, flexible, and adaptable', something that we think should be the case with software. Hence our new product name, ELASTIC APPS.
So what are ELASTIC APPS?
ELASTIC APPS are software applications that are rapidly built, robust for the enterprise, delivered as a service, and which can connect and interact with a range of other on-line services and platforms.
